Objectives : Antimicrobial activities were assayed through the hot water extracts from Hyeonggaeyeongyotang and its composition oriental medicines.
Methods : The author screened and isolated a Klebsiella pneumoniae from rhinitis(or paranasal sinusitis) patients. The optimum pH and temperature for the growth of the organism were in the range 7.0 and 37¡É, respectively.
Results :
1. The water extract of Hyemggaeyeongyotang, Angelime Gigantis Radix, Scutellariae Radix, Paem¢¥ae Radix Alba, Ledebom¢¥ellae Radix, Forsythiae Fructus, Cnidii Rhizoma, Glycyrrhizm? Radix showed strong antimicrobial activities against Klebsiella pneumoniae.
Size of inhibition zone(unit is mm) was Hyeonggaeyeongyotang 8.9, Angelime Gigmtis Radix 12.76, Scutellariae Radix 14.06, Paeomiae Radix Alba 11.28, Ledebouriellae Radix 11.21, Forsythiae Fructus 11.2, Cnidii Rhizoma 11.32, Glycyrrhizae Radix 11.47.
2. MIC of extract from Hyeonggaeyeongyotang and its composition oriental medicines was 3-5§¡.
3. Antimicrobial activity of the Hyeonggaeyeongyotang extract was not destroyed by the heating at 12 1 C for 15 min and not affected by pH.
Conclusion : Hyeonggaeyemgyotang extract was expected it was able to be treated a pneumonia caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae
